Dr. Jay Hildebrand (DMA, Guitar and Music Theory, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities 2016) engineers commercial cabinetry by day (Genothen Manufacturing, Olympia, WA), and teaches future guitar heroes by night (and on weekends). He has been studying guitar for over twenty years, and teaching at the college level for ten. He is the winner of the 2014 Northwest Guitar Festival Competition, and the 2013 Wilson Center Guitar Competition, and he has performed across North America.
Jay is thankful for his exceptional guitar teachers, including Rene Izquierdo, Michael Partington, Dr. Paul Grove, Maja Radovanlija, Mary Lou Roberts, Chris Bayman, Jerry Babin, and Linda Long. He has performed in masterclasses with Manuel Barrueco, Jason Vieaux, Martha Masters, Jorge Caballero, and many others. Performances include: Early Music Now (Milwaukee); Lowertown Classics (Saint Paul); Musical Mondays (Milwaukee); George F. Whitworth Donors Banquet (Spokane); Artist in Residence (Saint Mark's Episcopal, Milwaukee); Artist in Residence (Good Samaritan United Methodist, Minneapolis).
Jay enjoys the constant challenge of guitar teaching. His dissertation: "Anthology of Guitar Music for the Study of Musical Form" introduces the study of musical form through a collection of pieces selected for undergraduate guitar students. He has taught guitar at three universities, four music schools, and has run a home teaching studio for 10 years. Additionally, he has studied early childhood education with scholarships from the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Jay teaches in-home classical guitar lessons in Gig Harbor, Tacoma, Olympia, and surrounding areas in Washington. He enjoys spending time with his family, playing tennis, and . . . wait for it . . . playing guitar!
